Melbourne, Australia’s Camp Cope – Georgia Maq (vocals/guitar), Kelly-Dawn Hellmrich (bass) and Sarah Thompson (drums) – today released their new single “The Opener,” the first piece of recorded music from the trio since their late 2016 single, “Keep Growing.” The song is a no holds barred account of what it’s like to be a woman in the music world. Told through the clever lyrics and winding bass hooks for which Camp Cope have become known, “The Opener” calls out the men who’ve told them to do things every other way but their own. Listen now HERE. The song is the first cut from their highly anticipated second full-length album, due out in 2018 via Run For Cover. More information on the album will be announced soon.
Despite no other new music being released so far this year, 2017 has been a banner year for Camp Cope. They saw their self-titled 2016 debut released in North America on September 8, 2017 via RFC; made their eagerly awaited U.S. touring debut in July alongside Worriers, playing to adoring crowds across 13 states that included sold out shows in Brooklyn and Los Angeles; sold out two shows at the iconic Sydney Opera House as part of the annual Vivid LIVE festival; and headlined Melbourne’s Weekender Fest, a festival which they were opening band for merely two years earlier – and all between countless shows across Australia.
Camp Cope’s debut album was shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize and nominated for Australian Album of the Year at the J Awards. The album also has seen critical acclaim from all corners, including Pitchfork (8.0, “effusive, empathic, and emphatic”), Noisey (‘Best Albums of 2016’), Brooklyn Vegan (“one of the most promising debuts from a young new band this year”), and DIY (“it’s rare to find a band with the sheer songwriting ability and integrity of Camp Cope”), among others.
Camp Cope will preview material from their forthcoming new LP during a hometown Melbourne show at the city’s most stunning venue, The Forum, on Sunday December 3. Tickets are on sale now from the venue, with more touring news coming shortly.
